CHAPTER TWELVE

It had been five months and I managed to get through another heartbreak without breaking completely down. I made good on my promise to always be there for my son. My wound had pretty much healed almost completely and I was given permission by my doctor to go back to work if I wanted. In order to keep depression from getting the best of me again, I decided to go back to work at the dental office since my supervisor said that it would be ok for me to return whenever I got everything straight. I was blessed to have that type of boss because most jobs would have done their best to get rid of me whether I had a doctor’s note or not. Camille was a dear and volunteered to babysit so that I wouldn’t have to pay for daycare. Our hours were opposite so she had the time. I knew that I would have to face Alicia because she still worked there but I was willing to ignore her and do my work. She made an effort to make amends but I wasn’t having it.

“Hey, E.” She greeted me one afternoon as I sat at my desk, filing papers. I ignored her with a roll of my eyes. “Look, I know I messed up and everything, I just wanna say that I'm sorry. I care about you a lot and you didn’t deserve for me to do what I did.” I still said nothing as I kept my attention on the paperwork. She sighed, “Ebony, I wanna be friends again. It won’t be the same, I know but I miss you.”

“No thanks.” I replied dryly without looking up at her as she stood next to my desk.

“I expected you to say that, can we at least talk then?” I shook my head. “It's funny, if I was Jonah or somebody you would...” I cut her sentence short by shooting her a look that would kill her where she stood if I had the power. Who in the hell does this girl think she is? “Okay,” she shrugged “I tried.” She stormed off, bumping into a few of my coworkers on her way out. Everyone looked on in confusion.

“Y'all still beefin'?” Gloria, a thin, olive toned Hispanic girl in my department asked as she stepped closer to me.

“What makes you think we’re beefin' Gloria?” I quipped with attitude. She was nosy as hell. “Come on Ebony, everybody knows she did you scandalous.” Gloria replied with a smirk. I turned my attention back to my desk. I guess Alicia was running her mouth to everyone; I know that she didn’t expect me to come back to work or for the person she confided in to spill her business around the work place. “I would just let that go, life is too short.” Gloria added before she flipped her bone straight hair over her shoulder and walked off. I had planned to do just that. Alicia was like a sister to me but what she had done could never be fixed; it was the ultimate betrayal.
